
Dev Deepawali
Dev Deepawali aka ‘festival of lights of Gods’ is a festival mainly celebrated in Varanasi during Full Moon of Hindu Month of Kartika. It generally take place fifteen days after the Grand festival of Deepawali.
As per Hinduism religious context, Gods are believed to descend from heaven to Earth to take dip in the in the Ganges on this day. Therefore a lot of pilgrims from various cities reach Varanasi to take bath in Holy River Ganges. The tradition of lighting the lamps on the Dev Deepawali festival day was first started in Grand Celebration way at the Panchganga Ghat.
Dev Deepawali is celebrated exactly like Deepawali or Diwali festival, but the difference is that Deepawali or Diwali festival is celebrated in whole of India and Dev Deepavali is celebrated here specially in Varanasi. Houses are decorated with earthen lamps and colorful design patterns aka Rangolis along with various decorations to look different from other.
The festival is of great significance with a million Lamps are lit around the Ghats of Varanasi both earthen and floating including the Sky Lamps lighting the Ghats in vivid colours.
On the night of the festival, hundreds of thousands of devotees from the surrounding cities as well as foreign guests from overseas travel especially to Varanasi to take part in evening aarti celebrations and lit the oil lamps. The Aarti is performed by young Brahmin girls and boys and rituals involve chanting hymns, rhythmic drum beating, conch shell blowing, and brazier burning.
This evening aarti is watched by several guests from Boats along the riverfront in the evening.
