Kumbh Mela
Kumbh Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world and needs no introduction throughout the world. Lots of foreign media and travelers visit India to cover the sacred bathing of Hindu pilgrimage at Kumbh Melas be it at Haridwar, Nashik, Ujjain or Prayag.
The four fairs are held periodically at one of the above places every 6 years or 12 Years.
Dates of Kumbh Melas are decided on Astro Vedic calculation of Planetary movements. Few special bathing dates are decided on which significance of bathing is considered the most, thereby attracting over 30 Million Pilgrimage in a single day on prime bathing date of mauni amavasya.
This Mela or Festival is listed in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. An estimated 120 Million People visited Maha Kumbh Mela in 2013 in Prayag.
Every time A complete new city is built to cater the huge pilgrimage requirement of Kumbh Mela. In year 2019 One of the world’s largest Tented city was structured in Prayag Kumbh Mela.
The name of Kumbh Mela derived its name from the Original festival held according to astrological sign Kumbha (aquarious) as well as from the associated Hindu Legend in which god’s and demons fought over a pot aka “Kumbh” of Nectar which could give immortality. In scuffle between gods and demons, few drops of nectar fell out of pot on four places on earth hence Kumbh Festival or mela is organized on those places where drops of nectar fell on earth.
In 2021 Kumbh Mela is being organized in Haridwar – the sacred city of Uttrakhand where it will be held for over 02 months with millions of devotees supposed to attend to keep the legend alive.
A dedicated tented city will come into existence on the banks of river Ganges to host over Ten million pilgrims.
